Alopecia Areata (Hair loss)

Hair loss can be an emotionally difficult condition for both men and women. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks itself, in this case, the hair follicles.  The exact cause of hair loss in unknown.  A person’s particular genetic makeup combined with stress, illness, trauma, and medication-related factors trigger hair loss.

TREATMENT

There is no outright cure for alopecia areata, but some skin treatments can ease the condition.  Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications given as injections into the area of hair loss; these shots can lead to hair growth.  Topical solutions such as minoxidil or anthralin may promote hair growth.
