Skin Cancer

Non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most common types of cancer around the world. Fortunately, they are also the most curable. Melanoma is more dangerous and is becoming more frequent.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of skin cancer.  These cancers are abnormal, uncontrolled growths that arise from the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin).  Anyone with a history of sun exposure can develop BCC.  Although this skin cancer seldom spreads to vital organs, it can damage surrounding tissue.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common skin cancer.  This form of skin cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the squamous cells that make up most of the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis.  SCC is most common in areas frequently exposed to the sun.  Anyone with a history of substantial sun exposure is at increased risk.  Frequent use of tanning beds also multiplies the risk of SCC.  A small percentage of squamous cell carcinomas spread (metastasize) to local lymph nodes, distant tissues, and organs.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer.  In its earliest stages, melanoma is readily curable.  Left untreated, it can spread to vital organs and become life-threatening.

TREATMENT

Dr. David Bigler has been performing skin cancer treatments in Lincoln, NE since 1985.  Mohs micrographic surgery is a trusted, state-of-the-art procedure where he removes a thin layer of tissue containing the tumor.  While the patient waits, frozen sections of this excised layer are mapped in detail in our in-house laboratory, and examined under a microscope.  If cancer is present in any area of the excised tissue, the procedure is repeated on the corresponding area of the body still containing tumor cells, until the last layer viewed microscopically is cancer-free.  This technique can verify he has fully removed all sign of cancer and can save the greatest amount of healthy tissue.  Mohs skin cancer treatment has an approximate cure rate of 99%.
